Abstract
The increasingly commonplace question as to what theology is or should be and the increasingly unclear position of theology as an academic discipline and way of thinking are two sides of the same coin. Thus the question ‘what’ theology is, represents both a distancing between theology and the world in which it exists and a confrontation in which they meet. It symbolises both division and connection. Unveiling the performativity of this question may reveal what the real question is at its theological core.
